We are an Open Admission shelter, but we do gather some information before scheduling an animal intake.  For instance, if you have a stray pet, we may redirect you to the proper animal control agency.  If you have adopted the pet from a different shelter or rescue, you must contact THAT rescue to return the pet.  If you live outside Green Lake County, we may redirect you to the shelter that serves your area.  Once we have determined that we can accept the pet you wish to relinquish, we will then schedule an appointment for you.

We only accept animals by appointment.  As an Open Admission shelter, there are some days that we receive no new animals and other days we may take in as many as 15 new animals.  We NEED to schedule intakes so that we can efficiently care for new arrivals.

Please call the shelter if you have an animal to surrender so that we can assist you.

Open Door Policy

The Green Lake Area Animal Shelter is an organization that seeks to provide aid and shelter for all companion animals in need.  Therefore, no animal will be turned away due to age, health, behavior, lack of space, or the ability of the surrendering owner to pay a fee.

The Green Lake Area Animal Shelter is also an organization that seeks to place as many animals as possible in loving homes.  Because of this, every effort will be made to schedule incoming animals so that euthanasia need not be performed to make space for new arrivals.  Staff will work with other shelters, breed rescue groups, available foster homes, or the pet’s owner may be asked to wait to bring the animal to the shelter.

If no other arrangements can be made and/or the animal is in immediate need of shelter, the Green Lake Area Animal Shelter will abide by its open door policy, and the animal will be accepted.
